HOW IT STARTED:
Growing up in Kenya and at the age of 13, Michelle Abiero hadn’t been very educated on mental health as she had been battling mental illness herself. Michelle was contemplating suicide at this time and had only one friend that knew; this was due to suicide being more of a “taboo topic”. Knowing what she went through, she made it her goal to help other battling mental illness like she was and co-founded Project Fmile in 2017. Eventually Michelle made the decision of expanding Fmile to those who had other negative psychological triggers including bullying, body positivity, sexual assault and unstable households.
HOW IT’S GOING:
Michelle Abiero recently graduated from African Leadership Academy’s two-year pre-university program geared toward developing the next generation of African Leaders. Abiero has also started her own blog, where she discusses her thoughts on mental health and today’s society, tells stories about mental health, writes poetry, gives advice, and much more.
